I picked up his backpack and left the yard. It didn’t seem to bother him that he reached further and further away from his home. As I got closer to the office, I wondered if I did the right thing, but it was obvious to me that he was lacking the basics. Once I reached the front of my building carrying the boy in my arms, Andre bolted to the door to hold it open.

“Is that your kid? James didn’t say you had a kid Dollface.” He asked.

“Good Morning Andre.” I looked at my watch and realized I still had about fifteen minutes before the rest of the office would pour in.

I stepped off the elevator not once bothering the little boy hanging tight to my neck and sleeping soundly. Of the double doors, one was left unlock to my relief. I made the right to the executive wing and realized that I forgot to check the front of the building for the Maybach. I hoped and prayed that maybe James wasn’t there.

“Who do you have there Sierra?”

I tried to dart into my office unnoticed but I completely forgot about the jacked up drive-through window. I took a deep sigh and carried the little boy into James’ office.

James was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He had changed back into one of his drab fashion creations. He was not close to being as fun as he was the night before in his khakis and sandals.

As I approached his desk with the little boy stirring in my arms, I tried to come up with an explanation. “I’m not sure of his name.” That was the best I could do. It never came out the way I planned in my head.

James leaned back in his swirling chair and clicked the pen in his hands. “Ok? You just grabbed some random kid off the street?”

I held tight to the little boy and started to cry. An overwhelming need overflowed to my throat. I tried to hold back but the touch of the little boy holding tight protected me. I felt like I could’ve walked out the door and told James to take his job, his Black card, and his ego and shove it up his tight ass. I buried my face in the little boy’s soft skin and cried. James darted up from his chair and made sure his door was shut tight. He came back over to me and sat down on his desk.

“I’m so sorry.” He said. “Have a seat with the little dude.”

James handed me his handkerchief and took me by the arm while leading me to his plush leather chair. He made sure I sat down and he even stroked the little boy’s hair before he sat on his desk again to face me. I lifted my head and wiped my face with the handkerchief.

“I’ve been passing by his house.” I said in between sniffles. “I think he’s been sleeping outside for two days.” I rubbed my hand down the little boy’s back.
